Understanding Sweat and Excessive Hyperhidrosis

Understanding Sweat and Excessive Hyperhidrosis

Sweat is produced by the body as a temperature control measure, namely to reduce body temperature, and prevents the body from overheating.  There are millions of sweat glands distributed all over our bodies and the majority of them are  “eccrine” sweat glands, which are in high amounts on the palms of our hands, the sole of our feet, forehead, cheeks and armpits.

People who suffer from excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) tend to produce more sweat in these areas as excessive sweating is largely due to the overstimulation of these eccrine glands directly by the nervous system.  The eccrine sweat glands are pictured above  in green.

Eccrine sweat glands when stimulated by nerves release sweat.  The nerves can be activated by numerous things, like exercise, hormones, emotions. People with excessive sweating, produce more sweat than is necessary, which of course can lead to the embarrassment of having sweaty hands, sweaty feet or sweaty armpit marks.  We understand that for some of our client this really can impact on one’s self esteem, social activities and clothing choices.

What can be done:

Curvz is a Doctor-led clinic, with our Doctors and Nurses on site ready to assist.  Curvz utilises the latest procedures and the latest scientific evidence to deal with excessive sweating.  We can provide assistance with prescription medications or have you try botulinum toxin injections which is an approved TGA procedure for excessive sweating.  We have had success treating hands, feet and most commonly face and underarms with this treatment.

The botulinum toxin injections are well tolerated and act by reducing the stimulation of the sweat glands which then reduces sweating to normal levels and it lasts 6-9 months in most clients. We often do these treatments and most people typically get them done once per year.  The full benefit of the treatment takes 2-3 weeks to reach maximum effect.

Aftercare from injectable hyperhidrosis treatments

As you have received a needle, you may see a small bruise appear at the injection site, which will disappear over a few days. We use ice compression to make the procedure comfortable and to reduce bruising. A very rare side effect is that some people may sweat in a different area of your body as a sort of reflex or compensatory act of your body. Side-effects are very very rare, but you will be provided all the information to make your choice at the consultation, in great detail prior to any treatment.
