Acne

Acne is a very common condition which typically affects us in our teenage years as we undergo hormonal changes. For some of us, it can persist in our later years, even in our 30’s and 40’s as adult hormonal acne.

What is acne?

Acne is simply our sebaceous glands or hair follicle getting blocked up which forms unsightly pustules and is often due to increased oil production from the gland. It can appear anywhere on the body, but occurs typically on the chest, back, arms and face. It occurs in these areas as they have the greatest number of hair follicles and oil glands, and unfortunately more oil means more pimples.

As acne lesions can be quite large, scars can develop and are often a major concern for many acne sufferers. Acne can also have negative effects on mood and on socialising with peers. So trying to reduce the negative effects of acne is medically and socially important.

Curvz is a Doctor-led clinic, with our Doctors on site ready to assist. Curvz utilises the latest procedures and the latest scientific evidence to formulate an acne skin plan for our clients. We utilise a variety of topical creams, oral medication to create individualised programs for treating acne, to reduce oil production and to kill bacteria associated with acne. Ongoing maintenance of a topical skin regime with some light exfoliation peels suited to your skin are often used in combination with prescription strength products. This approach often leads to great success with acne without the need to go and see a specialist dermatologist. Naturally, we can organise if the need arises.

Acne Tips.

Acne is more than getting the occasional blackhead or whitehead. Acne cysts, is when there is bacteria present in the area, which can easily spread to other areas of the face quickly, bringing with it more redness, swelling and more unsightly pimples and cysts. So though we all tend to like pimple popping, it is a Big No Go. Popping pimples leads to you spreading more bacteria into the already-infected pores, plus it causes more inflammation. Left unmanaged, cystic or recurrent acne damages the collagen in the deeper part of the skin and scarring can develop.

Though cleansing is an important aspect of a good skin regime, too much can also be a bad thing, which can increase inflammation and redness. There are many causes and triggers of acne. Trigger factors include stress, diet, hormones, pollutants, cosmetics and even genetics can impact acne. Acne causes often lay deeper in the skin which is why they require medical treatments which can act on reducing hormones and oil production, killing bacteria more than anything else.
